Dr. Allen’s practice of veterinary medicine has been guided by her deep interest in wildlife health, infectious disease, and wildlife pathology. She has been privileged to bring this background to industry and government roles, holding positions with institutions such as Chicken Farmers of Ontario, and the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Rural Affairs. On this road, Dr. Allen has developed significant experience leading and assisting field teams in regards to immobilization (i.e., chemical/physical) and sample collection from free-ranging wild species.

Teaching and mentorship have also been an important part of Dr. Allen’s career. She has acted as a teaching assistant, a guest lecturer, consultant and mentor for veterinarians, veterinary students and wildlife professionals. Her pedagogical philosophy has always been to encourage students to constantly take what they learn in class and try to apply it to a larger lens. Wildlife disease is complicated, it encompasses many different factors, and Dr. Allen tries to tie real-world examples into her mentorship and teaching experiences so her students can be ready for the challenges of life outside of the classroom.

Dr. Allen completed her PhD in wildlife disease ecology/surveillance, vector-borne disease & comparative pathology. Her research focused on two viruses detrimental to wild/domestic ungulate species: epizootic hemorrhagic disease virus and bluetongue virus. She is currently working as the wildlife veterinarian for the state of Wyoming, USA.
